New Cumberland, WV – With a new year, the question for every pugilist is how far can your skills and prowess take you inside the ring. Boxing returns Saturday, Feb. 16, to the Mountain State as Angelo Magnone and Made Men Promotions brings Cupid’s Knockout to Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack, and Resort.

Coming off a six-round unanimous decision against Daulis Prescott (32-11-9, 24 KOs) back in December, 23-year-old Matt “Sweet Child” Conway of Pittsburgh puts his perfect record of 15-0-0 with six knockouts up against Jose Antonio Martinez (11-16-0, 6 KOs) from New Mexico. This super featherweight matchup is the main event and set for eight rounds.

Martinez claimed a majority decision in August in a four round lightweight match with Jorge Ortega (3-9-0) in Durango, Mexico. The 35-year-old fighter known as the Chore is originally from Chalchihuites, Zacatecas, Mexico.

For the Conway family, they have another member to root for during the evening as super lightweight Mike Conway (3-2-0, 2 KOs) seeks his fourth career triumph against David Veras Pena (0-1-0) from Maryland. It is the first bout for the 24-year-old Conway, also known as Maverick, since shoulder surgery eight months ago.

Matt spoke for the brothers with Brian Whan of Youngstown Boxing News, and talked about the team getting ready for their upcoming bouts: “The biggest ones behind us right now are our coaches, our dad, our strength coach, coach Ryan Rimsek, and Skeets Lavandosky they put in with us for the past ten weeks pushing us physically and mentally and we can’t thank them enough.”

One of my favorite up and coming unbeaten boxers in the area is Rosalindo Morales (2-0-0), an infantryman in the United States Marine Corp Reserves from Ellwood City, PA. The 25-year-old southpaw faces Jeremy Abram, 30, (2-1-0) of Cleveland, Ohio for four rounds of super lightweight action. Morales, who trains at the Ellwood City Police Department Boxing Club, claimed a majority decision in his September 2018 clash, on Labor Day Eve at Mountaineer, with Latorie Woodberry (2-7-2).
